DIET IN WINTER

Best way for dry skin in winter is good nutrition and proper hydration. The best way to keep your skin healthy in winter is to ensure that you have lots of fresh vegetables along with sufficient intake of water. Foods containing beta carotene (yellow and orange in color) like papaya, orange carrot yellow and red capsicum, peach, pineapple, sweet potato, radish, spinach, lettuce(purple) pumpkin etc are good to keep skin barrier intact and also to prevent dryness. Further drink two liters of water daily. Avoid fried and sweet foods. Do not expose yourself to excess sunlight as it breaks the skin barrier. Avoid hot water for bath.

HAVE ENOUGH WATER-DON'T CONFUSE THIRST FOR HUNGER

We tend to eat more during the winter because we feel hungry often. People feel less thirsty during the winters because they aren't sweating due to the cold temperature. Our body requires lots of water and when this requirement isn't fulfilled we misunderstand thirst for hunger and eat more than necessary. Therefore it is imperative to have enough water and not to confuse thirst for hunger.

AVOID

Avoid soap since it decreases natural moisturizers
Avoid taking steam during winter
Avoid exposing yourself to excess sunlight as it breaks the skin barrier.
Avoid hot water for bath.

NATURAL COSMETICS

Turmeric has curcumin as an active compound and contains anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which help neutralize the free radicals and treat dry skin. Mask can be prepared by mixing it with honey and milk. Apply it once a week

Soak a washcloth in cold milk and put the cloth on your dry skin for five minutes. Wash off with another cloth soaked in lukewarm water. Milk has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties that greatly help get rid of dry and itchy skin. Plus the lactic acid in milk exfoliates dead skin cells and increases the skins ability to retain moisture. Also it helps lighten your completion.

Yogurt is an excellent skin hydrating agent and has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps sooth dry and itchy skin. Also its lactic acid content helps get rid of any germs or bacteria that may cause dryness or itchiness. Apply fresh yogurt and gently massage it. Leave it on for ten minutes and rinse. The mild exfoliating action of yogurt will remove dry skin and leave your skin refreshed.

A mixture of mashed banana with butter can also be applied. Butter has moisturizing properties while the banana in the pack helps retain the moisture.

A mask of carrot not only is good for dry skin but also lightens the dark skin. The mask can be prepared with a carrot, grind it and take two tbsp of grounded carrot , mix it with one tbsp of honey, apply on your face and leave if on for 10 minutes. This mask lightens the dark skin and also helps to treat the dry skin.

A mask of almond with carrot is also useful. Mix eight washed almonds, with carrot which has been grounded with a 3/4th cup moderately hot milk. Add a spoon full oil to this, and apply the mixture to face and neck and wash after five minutes.

Application of a mixture of Aloe Vera and Coconut oil is good to cure dry skin in winter. Cut the spine of an aloe vera leaf, remove the rind and fillet out the inner fleshy gel. Throw it into the blender and mix with 1tbsp of coconut oil. Pour the mixture in spray bottle and spray on your face before sleeping.

COSMETICS FOR WINTER

Moisturizing skin is the most important treatment for adverse effects of winter on skin. Best skin care comprises of daily cleansing, moisturizing and protecting with a sunscreen. However during winter this has to be done more. Alcohol based skin application products should be avoided. Avoid drying soaps.

SPECIAL CARE FOR THOSE ON MEDICATION

Those who are on life-long medications due to thyroid , diabetes, hypertension and transplants have to take extra care in winter as their skin dries up not only due to the weather but also because of their medications.In any other weather the skin is able to cope but during the winter season there is a flare hence extra attention is needed.

SKIN CARE TO PREVENT ACNE IN WINTER

Apart from the skin care mentioned below , special care have to be taken to prevent acne because acne are not restricted only to summers and can occur in winter also and main reason for occurrence in winter is to dehydrated skin. It is highly important to cleanse your skin regularly since the air is full of loose dust and dirt particles and can clog the pores of your skin. Further don't use products with fragrance during winter. They irritate your skin. Further exfoliators too should be avoided during this season. Flaxseed oil can be used during winter. They reduce skin sensitivity roughness and scaling. It not only smoothes your skin but also increases your skin hydration

CARE OF THE LIP DURING WINTER

If lips become dry don't lick lip them since though it may give temporary relief, it actually worsens the condition. Use lip balm regularly since plain petroleum jelly wont work.

CARE OF YOUR FEET IN WINTER

Soaking your feet in hot water is beneficial during winter. Heat water and add an aromatic oil and dip your feet in it for 15 minutes. This will relax your nerves and drive the cold away.

PRECAUTIONS DURING WORKOUT

During winter due to cold your muscles become tight and therefore more prone to injuries. It is very important to get them warmed up prior to any physical activity. Warming up not only helps your body but also prepares itself for exercise both mentally and physically but also reduces the risk of injuries.
